Session 11, Period 1Editar
Initial PhaseEditar
Show the students the lyric of the song Hokey Pokey and encourage them to sing it and make the gestures the song indicates. This action will activate their sense of orientation and vocabulary.
After the song is finished, share with them the definition of compass, and the main symbols for orientation (turn right, left, etc.) in their workbooks lesson 11.
Check that students follow the song’s lyrics.
Intermediate PhaseEditar
With the information given by the song and the reading the students should complete activity 13.1 in their workbook.
Verify that students can follow the instructions in the “Hokey Pokey” song. Also check that students can relate the compass points to a way to indicate directions.
Wrap upEditar
Each student will complete the activity on their own.
You can request the participation of some of the students to give general feedback.
Session 11, Period 2Editar
Initial PhaseEditar
Show the students the lyrics of the song “Humpty Dumpty” and encourage them to sing it and make the gestures the song indicates. Also explain that the song is a nursery rhyme. More information is available on Wikipedia.
Play the song a second time, check that students are trying to follow instructions from the lyrics.
Intermediate PhaseEditar
Ask each group to draw a map of the school's community or neighborhood. They should show some reference points. Also, they will have to write three directions that tell people how to go from one place to another, by using the vocabulary they have gained. Here is a model.
Verify that students are: a. drawing a map, and b. give three directions using the map as reference.
Wrap upEditar
Each group will share with the rest of the class one of the situations in which they give directions.
Session 11, Period 3Editar
Initial PhaseEditar
Review activities from the previous periods.
Intermediate PhaseEditar
Explain to the group today's activity: A rally around the school. The main point of this activity is that students follow instructions about directions.
- Make a map of the school, including reference points.
- Write down a list of accurate directions.
- Make the rally more interesting by assigning a question to answer or a specific task to perform at each reference point.
Read more about rallies on the following websites:
Ask students to verify they understand the concept of a rally and the rules of the game.
Discuss with students the Can Do Statements related to Learning Session 11.
