Introduction[editar | editar código]

A spelling bee contest can be a very motivating activity. Spelling in English is essential, since it is not phonetic. Understanding and being able to spell are skills that will help students enhance their knowledge and improve their level of mastery in the use of English.

Didactic resources[editar | editar código]

  • Cardboard
  • Recycled sheets of paper
  • Envelopes
  • Google Translate
  • Dictionary
  • Notebooks
  • Timers
  • List of words for the spelling bee

Session 21, Period 1[editar | editar código]

Initial Phase[editar | editar código]

qué necesitamos saber

Review the alphabet. Place special emphasis on the vowels. Students should have worked on a Spelling Bee in Primero Básico.

For reference, use the following video.

Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]

todo el grupo

Have a list of words prepared to spell to students. Spell clearly every word three times. After you have done so, write the word on the board, so students can self-correct. You can do this word by word at first, and then in clusters of 3 or 5 words. Challenge your students accordingly.

Make sure all students understand the rules of a Spelling Bee.

Wrap up[editar | editar código]

trabajo en casa

Provide students with a list of words that will be part of the Spelling Bee in the last period of this learning session. They should practice at home spelling those words and add 10 words from their surroundings.

Session 21, Period 2[editar | editar código]

trabajo en parejas

Have students do pair check on homework. Circulate in the class and facilitate the process.

Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]

todo el grupo

Select students at random from the attendance list to rehearse with the whole class. Remind students silence is essential and demonstrates respect. Read the word out loud or use an electronic reader. (Google Translate and other dictionaries have sound producing functions which say the word). Follow the Spelling Bee Rules.

Wrap up[editar | editar código]

Session 21, Period 3[editar | editar código]

todo el grupo

Organize your class for the Spelling Bee. Set out desks in the way that is most convenient for your classroom.

In the first round of the Spelling each student has a chance to spell a word. Those who fail are eliminated from the contest.

Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]

todo el grupo

In the second round of the Spelling Bee the winners of the first round must compete with each other until you have 2 or 3 players left.

Wrap up[editar | editar código]

Hold the third and last round of the Spelling Bee between the two finalists. The winner is the Spelling Bee champion of the class. A diploma signed by the teacher when possible is always welcomed by students. You can also name the second and third place. Adapt to your class environment.
